Instructions

Methionine 20% Injection from VetViva is an injectable solution, an essential sulphur-containing amino acid, used to support liver function in horses, cattle, sheep, goats and dogs. Each millilitre supplies 200 mg of methionine (a 20% solution), given by slow intramuscular or intravenous injection. As a lipotropic agent, it helps the liver mobilise and process fat, making it a practical choice for animals under metabolic strain such as fatty liver and ketosis.

Key benefits of Methionine 20% Injection:

  • Supports liver function and helps counter fatty liver as a lipotropic, fat-mobilising amino acid.
  • Supplies sulphur for keratin, supporting healthy hooves, skin and coat.
  • Feeds glutathione and SAMe synthesis, aiding antioxidant and detoxification pathways.
  • Convenient 200 mg/mL (20%) concentration for flexible, weight-based dosing by injection.

What is the active ingredient?

An essential sulphur-containing amino acid, at 200 mg per mL (a 20% solution). The exact form, such as N-acetyl-DL-methionine.

What is Methionine 20% Injection used for?

Is used to prevent or treat methionine deficiency and to provide lipotropic, liver-protective support across farm and companion species. Is a precursor of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and glutathione, two compounds central to liver detoxification and antioxidant defence. By promoting the flow of fat and bile through the liver, helps reduce fat build-up in hepatic tissue and supports normal liver metabolism. It is manufactured by VetViva Richter GmbH.

How It Works?

Works to get rid of fat, thus providing protection for the liver and preventing the accumulation of fat within its tissues. Because methionine is one of the essential amino acids containing sulfur atoms, it protects the liver from damage and fat accumulation.

How is given to animals?

Methionine 20% Injection is administered by slow intramuscular or intravenous injection. Always follow the dosing printed on your product label and the advice of your veterinarian, as exact volumes and treatment intervals vary by formulation and clinical need. The widely used regimen for 20% methionine injections is shown below and should be confirmed against the VetViva label before use:

  • Horses: 50 mL.
  • Cattle: 50-100 mL.
  • Sheep and goats: 20 mL.
  • Dogs: up to 10 mL.
  • Repeat after approximately one week or as directed by your veterinarian.

Intramuscular injection can occasionally cause mild, transient discomfort at the injection site. If a large volume is required it may be diluted with water for injection as directed on the label. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, methionine is among the lipotropic compounds suggested for fatty liver in cattle, though it notes the response in ruminants is less clear-cut than in other species.

Important safety information:

Should be used with caution in animals with advanced liver disease, because in hepatic insufficiency it may worsen signs of hepatic encephalopathy. It is generally avoided in animals with kidney failure or pancreatic disease, and used cautiously in cats, which are sensitive to excess methionine. Confirm suitability with your veterinarian before treating pregnant, very young or unwell animals, and always read the label.

Which animals can receive this product?

It is typically labelled for horses, cattle, sheep, goats, dogs and for animals with metabolic stress or compromised liver function. Use in other species, including camels, should be directed by a veterinarian and confirmed against the product label. Browse more camels and horses health products in our category page

How should it be stored?

Follow the storage conditions on the VetViva label, typically a cool, dry place away from direct light, and observe the expiry date.
