What is Cortamethasone Injection used for?

According to the manufacturer’s approved indications, it is used in horses, cattle, goats, dogs and cats to treat inflammatory, allergic or shock conditions. In cattle and goats it is also indicated for the treatment of primary ketosis (acetonaemia and pregnancy toxaemia) and for the induction of parturition. In horses specifically, it is used for osteoarticular (joint and bone) inflammatory states.

How is Cortamethasone Injection given?

It is administered by intramuscular or intravenous injection. A dose of 4–10 ml per 100 kg bodyweight for horses, cattle, sheep and goats, and 0.5–1 ml per 10 kg bodyweight for dogs and cats. Because dosing depends on the species, condition and individual animal, always follow the label instructions and dose your animal under the direction of a qualified veterinarian. Corticosteroids generally improve rather than cure the underlying problem, so the primary condition should also be diagnosed and treated.

Important safety information:

Do not use this product in animals with diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism, renal insufficiency, heart failure or peptic ulcers. Not recommended in pregnant animals except in ruminants where labour induction is intended, as use late in pregnancy can cause premature delivery or abortion. Dexamethasone should not be given at the same time as vaccines, and prolonged use may cause effects such as increased thirst and urination, immunosuppression or delayed wound healing.
