Instructions

Ringer Lactate 5L by Salf is a sterile, isotonic intravenous infusion solution used to replace lost fluids and electrolytes in horses, cattle, dogs, and cats. Also known as Lactated Ringer’s or Hartmann’s solution, this balanced crystalloid supplies sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and lactate in proportions close to the body’s own extracellular fluid, making it a first-line choice for rehydration, circulatory support, and the correction of mild metabolic acidosis.

Key benefits and features

  • Balanced electrolyte replacement — supplies sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and lactate in physiologically balanced amounts.
  • Isotonic and plasma-like — approximately 273–280 mOsm/L, suitable for rapid, large-volume rehydration.
  • Buffering action — lactate is converted to bicarbonate, helping correct mild metabolic acidosis.
  • Convenient 5-litre bag — ideal for large animals and high-volume fluid therapy, reducing frequent bag changes.
  • Trusted manufacturing — produced by Salf S.p.A., a long-established maker of sterile infusion solutions.

Composition and active ingredients:

Salf Ringer Lactate is formulated from sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and sodium lactate (produced from lactic acid buffered with sodium hydroxide), manufactured by Salf S.p.A.

What is Ringer Lactate used for?

Ringer Lactate is an isotonic crystalloid that restores circulating volume and electrolyte balance when an animal loses fluid through dehydration, diarrhoea, vomiting, blood loss, surgery, or shock. The lactate component is metabolised in the liver to bicarbonate, which helps buffer the blood and correct mild-to-moderate (but not severe) metabolic acidosis. Labelled indications include replacement of extracellular fluid and electrolyte losses and the management of mild-to-moderate, but not severe, haemorrhagic shock.

How is Ringer Lactate given to animals?

Ringer Lactate is administered by intravenous infusion. Dosage is highly individual and depends on the degree of dehydration, ongoing losses, body weight, and clinical condition. As a label reference, Salf cites approximately 15 ml/kg for cattle and horses and 20–30 ml/kg for dogs and cats, with the dose adjusted at the discretion of the attending veterinarian. The product should only be given to animals with adequate kidney function and at a carefully controlled infusion rate to avoid excess potassium loading

Always inspect the bag before use: the solution must be clear and colourless, the bag intact, and free of visible particles. Do not co-administer this fluid through the same line as a blood transfusion, as the calcium content can promote clotting. Use with caution in animals with congestive heart failure, kidney disease, or any condition where fluid overload could occur.

Can it be used in camels and other livestock?

The Salf veterinary label specifies horses, cattle, dogs, and cats. Isotonic crystalloids such as Ringer Lactate are widely used across large-animal practice, and veterinarians in the GCC may elect to use them in other species, including camels, at their professional discretion. For food-producing animals, the Salf veterinary authorisation lists a zero-day withdrawal period for meat and milk.

Ringer Lactate 5L is part of Ghezlan’s range which includes complementary products such as dextrose infusions and sterile sodium chloride.

What is the difference between Ringer Lactate and normal saline?

It contains potassium, calcium, and lactate in addition to sodium and chloride, giving it an electrolyte profile much closer to plasma than 0.9% sodium chloride. For large-volume resuscitation it is often preferred because it carries a lower risk of hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis.

Does it need to be given by a vet?

Intravenous fluid therapy should be set up and monitored by a veterinary professional, because dosage, infusion rate, and route depend on the individual animal’s condition.

How should the 5-litre bag be stored?

Store as directed on the label, protect from temperature extremes, and use only if the solution is clear and the bag is undamaged. The Salf product carries a 36-month shelf life; do not use beyond the printed expiry.
