What is Halo injection used for?

Halo injection is indicated in the management of non-infectious inflammatory joint disease, possibly associated with early equine degenerative joint disease (DJD). Rather than being placed directly into a joint, it is given into the vein, allowing the hyaluronic acid to reach several joints at once. Because the equine synovial membrane is highly vascular, intravenous administration can give the synoviocytes greater exposure to exogenous hyaluronic acid, and may be preferable for animals with chronic or multiple joint problems. How is it given to horses and camels?

Horses (450–500 kg):

• Administer 6 mL by intravenous injection.

• Two days before a race: 6 mL for 400 kg camels (Howl & Zamool); 3 mL for 250 kg camels (Higayg & Ligaya).
• For acute or ongoing lameness due to joint disease: 6 mL (400 kg) or 3 mL (250 kg) by intravenous injection, weekly for 3–5 weeks.
