Halo injection is a sterile sodium hyaluronate solution (10 mg/mL) from CEVA, given by intravenous injection to support joint health in horses and camels by easing non-infectious joint inflammation and restoring the natural lubrication of synovial fluid. Each 6 mL vial delivers 10 mg of medium molecular weight sodium hyaluronate — the glycosaminoglycan the body uses to keep joints cushioned, mobile and comfortable — and a single IV dose can reach multiple affected joints throughout the body.

What is the active ingredient in Halo injection?

The active ingredient is medium molecular weight sodium hyaluronate at 10 mg/mL, so each 6 mL vial contains 60 mg of sodium hyaluronate.

What is Halo injection used for?

Halo injection is indicated in the management of non-infectious inflammatory joint disease, possibly associated with early equine degenerative joint disease (DJD). Rather than being placed directly into a joint, it is given into the vein, allowing the hyaluronic acid to reach several joints at once. Because the equine synovial membrane is highly vascular, intravenous administration can give the synoviocytes greater exposure to exogenous hyaluronic acid, and may be preferable for animals with chronic or multiple joint problems. This systemic route also eliminates the usual risks of intra-articular injection, including joint damage, septic arthritis and drug-induced joint reaction.
Full technical details appear on CEVA’s official Halo Injection product page.

Key benefits of Halo injection for joint health

  • Medium molecular weight sodium hyaluronate at 10 mg/mL a viscosity suited to intravenous use.
  • One IV dose treats multiple joints, unlike a single-joint intra-articular injection.
  • Avoids intra-articular risks such as septic arthritis, joint damage and drug-induced joint reaction.
  • Restores lubrication and limits joint effusion by replenishing synovial hyaluronic acid.

How is it given to horses and camels?

Halo injection for intravenous use only and must be administered by, or under the direction of, a veterinarian using sterile technique. For horses, a radiographic (X-ray) examination to rule out joint fractures is recommended before treatment.

Horses (450–500 kg):

  • Administer 6 mL by intravenous injection.
  • Repeat weekly for 3–5 injections.

Camels (by intravenous injection):

  • Immediately after racing and Big Tahfeem (mefham al-tool): 6 mL for 400 kg camels (Howl & Zamool); 3 mL for 250 kg camels (Higayg & Ligaya).
  • Two days before a race: 6 mL for 400 kg camels (Howl & Zamool); 3 mL for 250 kg camels (Higayg & Ligaya).
  • For acute or ongoing lameness due to joint disease: 6 mL (400 kg) or 3 mL (250 kg) by intravenous injection, weekly for 3–5 weeks.

Always consult the product label and leaflet for restraints, contraindications, precautions and side effects, and follow your veterinarian’s advice. Users must adhere to local and racing regulations, as medication rules apply to performance horses and racing camels.

Can it be injected directly into the joint?

No. It is formulated for intravenous use only. The IV route lets the hyaluronic acid reach multiple joints at once while avoiding the risks of intra-articular injection, such as septic arthritis and joint damage.

How is it dosed for racing camels?

For racing camels the product is given intravenously around race events and for lameness: 6 mL for 400 kg camels and 3 mL for 250 kg camels, with a weekly course of 3–5 weeks used for joint-disease lameness. Always confirm the protocol with your veterinarian.

Should I X-ray my horse before treatment?

Yes. A radiographic examination is recommended beforehand to rule out joint fractures, helping confirm the treatment is appropriate for your horse.
